Lack of interest forces cancellation of Father’s Day race

WEST CHESTER TWP. — Organizers of the Father’s Day version of the Great American Race scheduled this weekend at Keehner Park have cancelled the event due to a lack of interest.

Greg Benton, organizer of the event for Flying Color Sports, said the race is being cancelled because not enough teams have signed up. As of Tuesday, only 10 teams had registered to participate in the event scheduled for Sunday, he said.

He said normally the event averages about 100 teams signing up to participate in the race modeled after the popular television show “The Amazing Race.”

“The turnout was not what we were hoping for. We always do a spring and fall race so we’re going to move it to the fall, and keep on our regular schedule,” Benton said.

“We had some people that requested a Father’s Day (race), but it wasn’t enough support to make it worth a competitive event. Usually, you want 40 teams to make it competitive.”

He said the marketing and communications firm will refund the 10 teams their $40 participation fees.
