“Whilst only a short time ago we felt optimistic that September was far enough away to confidently proceed with our plans, as it stands today [8 June] we cannot guarantee the one thing that our exhibitors trust us to deliver above all else - namely a large-scale, high quality event,” read an announcement from marathon organizers.

The marathon has not been canceled since 2001.

Those who registered to participate in the marathon can complete a virtual marathon, gifting the registration to an Airman for 2021 or deferring for a future year.

Registrants will be emailed about how to proceed.

Those who register for the virtual marathon do not have to take any actions. Anyone who has not registered but wishes to participant in the virtual event can still sign up.

“We simply cannot execute the marathon in a manner where the safety and security of our runners, volunteers, staff, partners and spectators is satisfactorily achieved,” said Brandon Hough, Air Force Marathon director. “However, our team has worked hard to offer numerous options to registered participants to be as accommodating as possible.”

The cancellation was due to concerns about public gathering being limited to 10 people as a result of the coronavirus pandemic, as well as other uncertainties that could lead to a last-minute cancellation.

Though Gov. Mike DeWine and Ohio Department of Health Director Amy Acton have been loosening restrictions as the state reopens, public gatherings are still restricted, as well as concerts and spectators at sports.
