Franklin woman pleads guilty in companion dog’s death

A Franklin woman accused of killing her boyfriend’s comfort dog pleaded guilty Tuesday to cruelty to a companion animal.

Laura Bailey, 22, was given intervention in lieu of conviction.

A Montgomery County judge ordered Bailey to pay $1,590 in restitution.

“Our wish was that she would’ve maybe gotten jail time for animal cruelty and never own another animal,” said Donna Collins, whose son, David Moore, owned the dog. “We were hoping that she would go to the dog pound and clean out dog cages with supervision and stuff.”

Moore got Angel, a Chihuahua, when the dog was 6 weeks old.

“He has PTSD,” Collins said. “It was a comfort dog for him.”

On March 31, 2018, Bailey injured Angel at a Baltimore Street home in Dayton.

Collins said she took Angel to an emergency clinic, but was told by staff there was nothing they could do.

“It’s caused him a lot of pain with the PTSD,” Collins said of her son. “... He’s still suffering from it. He got another dog, but I don’t think it will take Angel’s place.”
