Father’s Day Weekend: Flooding concerns for Miami Valley

A weather system is setting for Father’s Day weekend and through the early part of next week that is poised dump heavy rain.

Some model projections give us 4 inches of rain today through Tuesday, with about an inch a day for some areas, Storm Center 7 Meteorologist Dontae Jones said.

The Miami Valley already has been saturated with above average precipitation over the past seven months with round after round of storms moving through.

The Miami Valley’s average June precipitation is about 4 inches. About an inch of rain already has fallen, and with the projection of rainfall, that will put us at about 5 inches in just the first half of the month.

The excess rain likely will cause some problems with flash flooding over Father’s Day weekend, as well as gradual rising water levels through early next week.

Farmers also will have to decide whether to continue planting in such saturated grounds, Jones said.

People attending outdoor events may have to keep an eye to the sky for rain and storms, while other activities may have to be moved indoors.
