Cloudy with a Chance of Podcast: Don’t let bugs bug you this spring

They might be considered pests, but bugs are a vital part of our ecosystem! Ecologist Chelse Prather from the University of Dayton sat down with Chief Meteorologist McCall Vrydaghs and Meteorologist Kirstie Zontini to talk all about bugs! A relatively mild winter does have an impact on the bug population from mosquitoes to stink bugs to bees.

“They can survive for long periods of time because they’re naturally going through this diapause phase where they have to eat very little so they’re not finding stuff in your house to eat, they’re just sort of hanging out and waiting for the winter to be over,” Prather explains about stink bugs.

She has done research in the rain forests of Puerto Rico and the grasslands of middle America to learn more about the behavior and life cycle of all different types of bugs! Did you know that some species can even predict the weather!?
