Chemical company looking to expand, add jobs in Middletown

A Middletown chemical company could get financial help from the city for a proposed expansion of its laboratory and offices.

Shepherd Chemical Company-Middletown’s proposed $2 million expansion of its facility at 3444 Yankee Road would boost its quality assurance laboratories and office space that would retain 24 jobs and add three to five new jobs, city officials said.

Middletown’s City Council will consider a $5,000 grant that would cover permitting fees associated with the project.

Norwood-based Shepherd Chemicals, manufactures metal salts and compounds and has sales and distribution offices in the U.S., Europe, China and Japan and ships its products to 57 countries, according to its website.

The company has an annual payroll of $1.2 million, and the expansion would add another $150,000 to the payroll, according to city documents. The Middletown manufacturing facility uses about five acres of a 40-acre parcel.

Middletown Economic Development Director Jennifer Ekey said the company has said that any incentives will play an important role in its decision about additional space and what additional services to shift to the Middletown facilities.

City Council will consider final approval of the ordinance at its Oct. 1 meeting.
