Black Global Woman to be crowned this weekend in Middletown

A woman who serves as an “advocate for the voiceless and servant to the under served” will be recognized this weekend during Petals of Promise, said event organizer Pat Herndon.

The first Petals of Promise induction ceremony will be held Sunday at the Windamere, 2 S. Main St. During the ceremony, eight African American women will talk about how God impacted their lives, Herndon said. Then the women will gather upstairs and decide who’s crowned Black Global Woman, Herndon said. The candidates can’t vote for themselves, she said.

The keynote speaker is Cheryl Washington, president and partner of CR Washington Law Co. in Dayton. She has been practicing law for more than 20 years in the area of civil litigation, business law, sports and entertainment.

The Black Global Woman contestants include Middletown’s Anedra Million, Marie Edwards, Tishanna Hicks, Deidra Marshall, Monique Patterson and Ruth Kelly, Lebanon’s Shelly Kirby and Dayton’s Thelma Parks.

Herndon called all the contestants “seasoned women,” before adding: “They deserve to be honored.”

Proceeds from the event will benefit Girls Who Code Club of Middletown, a national non-profit whose goal is to close the gender gap in technology. The 150 clubs are free, after-school programs for sixth graders through seniors to use computer science to impact their communities.

The club provides internships and “lines up” girls with local companies, Herndon said.

The Middletown club meets at the Dream Center, 834 Yankee Road. For information on the club, call Karen Bell at 646-596-0386.

The only other Girls Who Code Club in Butler County meets at Miami University in Oxford.

Herndon was asked the meaning of being a Black Global Woman.

“Success,” she said. “Because of why I am, what I am and what I want to do. I can do whatever I want to do. I can set the stage for whatever I want to do. I can accomplish anything.”
