Adult enrollment nearly doubles at career center

CLEARCREEK TWP. — Enrollment has increased dramatically in adult education courses and a big jump in high school enrollment may be in store for the Warren County Career Center.

Adults signing up for course work in the medical profession and in welding, to use just two examples, has nearly doubled from last year’s enrollment level, according to Tom Harris, adult education director at WCCC.

High school enrollment is also increasing.

About 1,500 sophomores were scheduled to visit the center this week, according to Gary Patton, director of secondary education. About 30 percent of those students will end up enrolling at the career center, Patton said.

“With numbers like this, you’re going to see big numbers next year,” Patton recently told school board members.

This year’s senior class numbers 360, while the juniors are counted at 402, according to school records.

The career center, 3525 N. Ohio 48, is planning an open house from 4:30 to 7 p.m. Dec. 9. The event is open to the public and will include information about adult education programs as well as post-secondary opportunities for career-technical students.

Students will be exposed to the various activities at the center and will see various labs in which career center students receive training and learn trades.

The open house should be a positive experience because it’s an important time to let the community see what the career center is all about, even for students who won’t end up enrolling there, said Superintendent Maggie Hess.
