43 Hamilton football players must quarantine after 1 player tests positive for COVID

Hamilton High School’s next 2 football games canceled due to contact tracing protocols.

Hamilton High School canceled its next two Friday night football games due to COVID-19.

Only one Big Blue football player tested positive for the coronavirus, but after school nurses did contact-tracing to find out who may have been exposed, 43 varsity and reserve players had to be quarantined.

Those student athletes are in a 10-day quarantine, Athletic Director Missy Harvey said, which “means they cannot return to school until Sept. 1.”

“That was giving our kids two days to prepare for a varsity football game, and for them to have been off for 10 days and come back, and to get acclimated, it did not seem to be a safe or fair situation for us to put our players into, which is why we went the full two weeks,” Harvey said.

The varsity team won its first game, against West Clermont High School, 43-28.

The Big Blue football team was scheduled to play Edgewood High School at 7 p.m. Friday at Hamilton’s Virgil M. Schwarm Stadium. The junior varsity game against Edgewood on Saturday also was canceled.

The Friday night football game for the following week, on Sept. 3, was to be held at Princeton High School in Springdale. The JV game for Sept. 4 also was canceled.

Hamilton High School is scheduled to resume play Week 4 with an away game Sept. 10 at Lakota East High School in Liberty Twp., according to the team’s schedule.

Hamilton, a Division I football program, is a member of the Greater Miami Conference.
