Hamilton faces unique equipment problem in repairing potholes

Every jurisdiction in Butler County is having a tough time battling the effects of this year’s changing weather, but Hamilton’s equipment poses an even bigger problem.

The city has been filling about 400 potholes a week since the freeze/thaw effect took hold of the region, but crews can’t use the 18 larger capacity dump trucks to haul asphalt because those vehicles are still outfitted for snow removal and salting.

Public Works Director Jim Williams said crews are also revisiting potholes multiple times because the plugs are constantly popping out.

“To complicate matters our trucks are still equipped with V bodies, which is the salt dispensing units inside the bed of the truck,” he said. “So we only have certain quantities of asphalt we can put down at this time… The V bodies are actual inserts that sit in the back of the dump trucks and it’s a major operation to put them in.”

He said they have two-man crews working on the each side of the city using trailers to haul the patching material.

Butler County Engineer Greg Wilkens agreed this season has been rocky, but it has been worse. He said the county did away with trucks that use the “V body” inserts some time ago.

“We’ve seen it worse, I’m not going to say we’re devastated by it,” he said.
