Funeral services set for area basketball icon

Services are set for an area basketball icon who died earlier this month.

A gathering is set for Friday and a Mass for Feb. 26 for Dan Gerhard, who spent decades in the Dayton area as both a decorated player and a coach.

Gerhard died Feb. 13 at age 66. As a high school athlete, he was Player of the Year in Ohio in 1970 when Dayton Chaminade won the state title with a 27-0 record.

After playing at Ohio State University, he later became boys basketball coach at West Carrollton High School, where he spent nearly three decades before retiring in 2014. During his time there, Gerhard was honored as both Teacher of the Year and Ohio District 15 Coach of the Year.

A gathering of family and friends from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at Tobias Funeral Home – Far Hills Chapel. Mass of Christian Burial is set for noon, Monday, Feb. 26, 2018 at St. Albert the Great Catholic Church. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the charity of your choice.
