Tuberville, 64, made the announcement Saturday on Twitter. He will run as a Republican and seek the Alabama seat held by Sen. Doug Jones, a Democrat who is running for reelection, according to AL.com.

"After more than a year of listening to Alabama's citizens, I have heard your concerns and hopes for a better tomorrow. I am humbled to announce the next step -- I will be a GOP candidate for US Senate," Tuberville tweeted.

Tuberville coached at Auburn from 1999 to 2008, compiling a 85-40 record in 10 seasons. He led the Tigers to a 13-0 record in 2004. Before coming to Auburn, Tuberville coached at the University of Mississippi from 1995 to 1998 and went 25-20. He also coached at Texas Tech (2010-2012), where he went 20-17; and at the University of Cincinnati (2013-2016), where he was 29-22. His overall college coaching record is 159-99.
