Wendling’s annual salary, which is retroactive to May 1, is now $154,577.25. His monthly car allowance was also increased to $575 a month.
Miller said Wendling deserves the raise as “Mark has done an outstanding job over the last couple of years.”
“Everybody on council is very satisfied with Mark’s performance and we did the best we could to compensate him,” Miller said.
Wendling was hired six years ago as the assistant city manager with the hope he’d succeed Art Pizzano as city manager. He was promoted to city manager on May 1, 2015 and awarded a three-year contract that expires on April 30, 2018.
The amended contract does not extend Wendling’s contract, but his contract does have an annual automatic one-year renewal clause unless otherwise decided by the majority of city council.
Miller said he hopes Wendling stays on throughout his next term as mayor. Miller is up for re-election in November but is unopposed.
“We’ve got some big plans in terms of strategic planning and Mark’s going to be at the helm of that,” the mayor said.
Miller said the city would be “lucky” if Wendling matches Pizzano’s near two-decade run as the city’s city manager.
“Mark was hired with the thought he could take (Pizzano’s) place and be there for the long term,” he said.
