Man accused of ambushing Middletown police officer, stealing cruiser now in jail

A Middletown man who allegedly stole a police cruiser and purposely rammed another cruiser is in the Middletown City Jail awaiting his first court appearance.

Jason Cooper, 49, is expected to appear Wednesday morning in Middletown Municipal Court. He’s charged with felonious assault, a second-degree felony; aggravated vehicular assault, a third-degree felony; grand theft felony, of the fourth degree; aggravated menacing, a first-degree misdemeanor; assault on a police officer, a fourth-degree felony; obstructing official business, resisting arrest, driving under suspension and criminal tools.

Cooper was scheduled to be in court on Friday, but his appearance was continued because he was being treated at Atrium Medical Center for the injuries he suffered in the crash Thursday morning.

Cooper allegedly stole Officer Patrick Glassburn’s cruiser when Glassburn responded to an apartment on Bavarian Street. After getting into the cruiser, Cooper allegedly crashed into a cruiser driven by Officer Ryan Morgan. Morgan was treated and released from Middletown Kettering Medical Center.

Cooper suffered a punctured lung in the accident. He was treated at Atrium over the weekend, police said.
