A Lantana, Fla., man was arrested on Thursday after police said he bought more than $5,000 in gift cards with stolen credit card information at a Publix and a gas station.
Cariell Martin, 34, faces charges of grand theft, fraudulent use of a credit card, and money laundering.
On Sept. 27, Lantana police officers responded to a Publix around 3 p.m. on West Lantana Road when a woman said she noticed fraudulent transactions on her credit card at the store.
Since Aug. 17, records show Martin made a total of 36 transactions at the Publix and another 22 transactions at a Shell gas station across the street. Managers at the Publix and Shell station revealed that the purchases were for Visa gift cards along with a few small items, according to the police report.
Officers tracked Martin down at the same Publix on Sept. 28 when police got a call from the manager that he was making another transaction in the store. Police arrested Martin in the parking lot and found him in possession of a $200 gift card, a Maryland driver’s license with the name John R. Grace, and a debit card with the same name.
Martin told officers he got the fraudulent credit information and the fake ID from a person he knew in Chicago.
He remains at the Palm Beach County Jail on a $174,000 bond, according to jail records.
