Suspect in I-85 bridge fire indicted on felony charges

The man accused of starting a fire that led to the I-85 bridge collapse was indicted Friday on felony arson and criminal damage to property charges, the Fulton County District Attorney’s Office said.

Officials say Basil Eleby allegedly smoked crack cocaine before placing a chair in a shopping cart and setting it on fire, leading to the March 30 collapse.

Two witnesses to the fire, Sophia Brauer and Barry Andrew Thomas, were cited for criminal trespass.

Eleby faces 25 years in prison and $50,000 fine.

He remains in the Fulton County jail on a $200,000 bond. He is scheduled to appear in court April 14.
