Edward Gomez, 25, of Phoenix, is charged with aggravated assault and is being held at the Maricopa County Jail in lieu of a $7,500 bond, the television station reported. Gomez initially appeared in court Friday and is scheduled to be arraigned Thursday, KNXV reported.

Police responded about 5:30 p.m. Thursday and said they found Marcus Brito in the parking lot of an apartment complex "holding part of his left ear in his hand," the television station reported.

Brito said Gomez accused him of cheating, cornered him in the bathroom of an apartment, pushed him and then bit his ear, KTVK reported.

"It happened so quickly I didn’t even know," Brito told the television station reported. "I knew he bit me, but I didn’t know my ear had fallen off until I actually was able to hold it in my hand."

Gomez told police he acted in self-defense, claiming it was Brito who confronted him in the bathroom, KNXV reported.

Birto was taken to an area hospital, the television station reported.
