Rep. Wes Goodman, R-Cardington.

Republican Wes Goodman resigned his seat in the Ohio House on Wednesday, the second lawmaker to abruptly step down after allegations of inappropriate conduct surfaced in the Statehouse.

House Speaker Cliff Rosenberger, R-Clarksville, pressed Goodman to resign after learning details of “his involvement in inappropriate behavior related to his state office.”

Rosenberger said in a statement that Goodman confirmed the allegations and “It became clear that his resignation was the most appropriate course of action for him, his family, the constituents of the 87th House District and this institution.”

Goodman, 33, of Cardington, represented all of Wyandot, Crawford and Morrow and parts of Marion and Seneca counties. He worked for U.S. Rep. Jim Jordan, R-Urbana, from 2007 to 2013 and ran for the Ohio House in 2016.

Goodman issued the following statement: “Serving as the state representative for the 87th Ohio House District has been one of the great honors of my life. We all bring our own struggles and our own trials into public life. That has been true for me, and I sincerely regret that my actions and choices have kept me from serving my constituents and our state in a way that reflects the best ideals of public service. For those whom I have let down, I’m sorry. As I move onto the next chapter of my life, I sincerely ask for privacy for myself, my family, and my friends.”

Last month, Findlay Republican Cliff Hite resigned his seat in the Ohio Senate after allegations surfaced that he had sexually harassed an employee of the Legislative Service Commission, which drafts and analyzes bills for the General Assembly.

Senate President Larry Obhof, R-Medina, and Rosenberger both said they are mandating sexual harassment training for their chambers.
