Amazon pulls out of plans for HQ2 in New York

Amazon will no longer build a second headquarters in New York.

The long-awaited HQ2 announcement late last year revealed Long Island City in Queens and Crystal City in Northern Virginia as a dual second headquarters for the online giant. The two locations were expected to split a more than $5 billion in investment and 50,000 jobs.

But the online giant announced Thursday that it has pulled out of the deal in a blog post.

“While polls show that 70% of New Yorkers support our plans and investment, a number of state and local politicians have made it clear that they oppose our presence and will not work with us to build the type of relationships that are required to go forward with the project we and many others envisioned in Long Island City,” the company said in the statement.

Amazon does not plan to reopen the HQ2 search at this time. Columbus spent more than a year on the list of potential cities to house the major investment.

The other second headquarters plan in Northern Virginia will continue as planned along with an operations center in Nashville.
