Ohio’s COVID cases per 100K people climbs back over 400

After weeks of declining COVID-19 transmission rates, Ohio saw an increase in cases per 100,000 people over two weeks.

Ohio reported an average of 410.5 cases per 100,000 people over two weeks, according to the Ohio Department of Health. On Nov. 4, the state recorded 354.3 cases per 100,000.

All of Ohio’s 88 counties reported fewer than 1,000 cases per 100,000 people. The CDC’s definition of a high COVID transmission rate is 100 case per 100,000 people. None of the counties had fewer than 100 cases per 100,000. Defiance County had the highest transmission rate with 908.4 cases per 100,000 people. Athens County reported 176 cases per 100,000, the fewest reported in the state.

The state health department reported the following two-week transmission rates for local counties:

  • Miami County: 458 cases per 100,000 people
  • Champaign County: 457.8 cases per 100,000 people
  • Clark County: 407.2 cases per 100,000 people
  • Butler County: 327.6 cases per 100,000 people
  • Warren County: 318 cases per 100,000 people
  • Darke County: 316.9 cases per 100,000 people
  • Montgomery County: 316.5 cases per 100,000 people
  • Greene County: 295.4 cases per 100,000 people
  • Preble County: 291.1 cases per 100,000 people

Daily cases remained high compared to recent weeks, with Ohio reporting 4,994 cases in the last day, according to ODH. On Wednesday Ohio surpassed more than 5,000 daily cases for the first time in a week. The last three days are highest three daily cases numbers for Ohio in the last three weeks.

The state’s 21-day average is 3,763 cases a day. In the last week Ohio is averaging 4,299 cases a day.

More than 34,000 Ohioans ages 5 to 11 have started the COVID-19 vaccine, according to the state health department. It accounts for about 3.44% of that age group’s population.

Nearly 6.56 million residents, or 56.12% of Ohioans, have received at least one dose of the vaccine, including 67.34% of adults and 59.64% of those 5 and older.

More than 6.08 million Ohioans, 52.06%, have finished the vaccine, including 62.9% of adults and 55.32% of those 5 and older.

ODH reported 2,460 COVID-19 patients hospitalized in Ohio as of Thursday, with 680 in ICUs and 458 on ventilators. While hospitalizations have been gradually decreasing in recent weeks, there’s been a slight increase over the last few days. Thursday marked the fifth straight day the number of hospitalized COVID patients increased in the state.

Coronavirus patients account for 9.4% of hospital beds, 14.57% of ICU beds and 9.64% of ventilators in Ohio. There are 5,141 (19.6%) hospital beds, 938 (20.1%) ICU beds and 3,018 (63.51%) ventilators available.

In the last day, Ohio recorded 190 hospitalizations and 17 ICU admissions. The state’s 21-day average is 176 hospitalizations and 18 ICU admissions a day, according to ODH.
