Country legend Loretta Lynn fell last week and broke her hip, according to a Jan. 8 Twitter post from her sister, Crystal Gayle.

“My birthday wish is for everyone to send love and prayers to my sister, Loretta Lynn, who fell and broke her hip last week,” Gayle, who is celebrating her birthday on Tuesday, said in a statement on Twitter.

“I was with Loretta yesterday. She is in good spirits and is doing as well as can be expected with this type of injury. Thank you for your love, prayers and continued support!”

The broken hip is just the latest medical setback for Lynn. Last May, she suffered a stroke that forced her to cancel most of her concert appearances. Since then, she has made a few limited appearances, including a stop at the Country Music Hall of Fame's annual Medallion Ceremony to induct Alan Jackson.

During that appearance, Lynn was unable to walk without assistance, but she did crack a few jokes and tell some stories about what Jackson's music meant to her.

She told him, “This is the first time I’ve been out of the house. You’re the only thing that could have brought me here. I love you, honey, and I want to say, ‘Congratulations.’ I am so proud of you. Hey, you should be here (in the hall of fame).”

Lynn also shared the story of her first conversation with Jackson after hearing him perform a few songs.

She recalled, “The first time I ever met Alan and seen Alan, he looked like a scared little boy. He was practicing backstage going through his songs. I remember, I looked at him and I said, ‘You’re gonna be one of the greatest singers in country music.’ He hasn’t let me down.”

Lynn has continued to sing after her stroke. In September, she posted a photo of her with her band, The Coal Miners.

Lynn's Twitter page confirmed Gayle's statement, adding that she is recovering at home:

“Loretta Lynn is recovering from a fractured hip after a fall while at home. She is doing well and thanks all her fans for their thoughts and prayers.”
