HBO released the official trailer Sunday night for "Big Little Lies," the Emmy Award-winning miniseries that returns for its second season June 9. Witherspoon will reprise her role as Madeline Mackenzie, joining Nicole Kidman, Zoë Kravitz, Shailene Woodley, and Laura Dern in their hometown of Monterey, California, Vogue reported.

The Monterey five return in seven new episodes to deal with last season's cliffhanger ending. The series will have two big additions this year: Meryl Steep, and a new director, Andrea Arnold, CNN reported.

The main characters will be trying to cover up -- spoiler alert here -- the death of Perry Wright, played by Alexander Skarsgard, Vogue reported.

Streep will play Wright’s mother, the magazine reported.

In the trailer, Streep shows her suspicions as she speaks with Witherspoon.

"My son is dead. I want to know what happened that night," Streep says in the trailer. "I'm very tempted to ask you, but I don't think I would get the truth, would I?"

The plot is based on the best-selling book by Liane Moriarty, according to CNN.
