FOOD plus FUN: 10 events you don’t want to miss this month

August is a month of many food celebrations.

It’s national catfish, panini, peach and sandwich month, but locally it’s so much more.

Here are some food events taking place that are worthy of consideration in between all of the catfish, panini, peach and sandwich celebrating you manage to fit in.

Aug. 8, 15, 29: Lunch Box Yoga

Benjamin & Marian Schuster Performing Arts Center, 1 W. 2nd St., Dayton

Need a good stretch and delicious lunch to power you through the rest of the work day? Take care of both with Lunch Box Yoga. This new series invites you to bring your personal mat and join us in the Emerson Lounges overlooking the Wintergarden of the Schuster Center. Yoga instructor Ranjani Powers of Yoga XTC will guide a 45-minute journey of rejuvenation followed by quality nourishment from Citilites restaurant. When you are finished with your yoga session, your boxed lunch will be ready and waiting. Select your box lunch when reserving your space. Vegan, vegetarian and gluten-free options are available. Aug. 9: 12th Annual Taste of the Greene

The Greene Town Center, 452 Buckeye Lane, Beavercreek

Restaurants at the Greene will be looking to impress at this event which continues to grow in popularity. Advance tickets to the event, which runs from 5:30-8:30 p.m. are $15 online and at EO Burger at The Greene. Admission is $20 the day of the event.

Aug. 11: Festival of the Vine

Fraze Pavilion, 695 Lincoln Park Blvd., Kettering

Fine wine and cool jazz will be featured at the free Fraze festival. Grab a snack, grab some vino and enjoy the weekend.

Aug. 11: Great American Beer Tasting

Fifth Third Field, 220 North Patterson Blvd., Dayton

For many beer is food and if you fall into that boat, this event is for you. The Great American Beer Tasting, featuring over 100 beers, costs $30 for an advance ticket and includes 20 4 oz. samples, a custom pint glass, and a raffle ticket for Budweiser and Dragons merchandise.

Aug. 13 and 27: Mudlick Tap House Floats

135 E. 2nd St., Dayton

Mudlick Tap House, Twin Creek Kayak and Canoe Livery and Sweetwater Brewing have teamed up to do a very special event for beer loving, outdoor adventurers with an appetite. Guests of the Mudlick Tap House floats paddle on a guided kayaking tour on the Mad River and experience the urban landscape from Eastwood MetroPark to Riverscape River Run. Floats happen the second and fourth Mondays of the month. Mudlick opens the restaurant up after the fun has been had on the river for a limited menu that typically consists of a couple of sandwiches, an entree and a sharable. Kayak rentals are limited and must be booked in advance. Kayak rental and transportation are $35, which includes rental, lifejacket, paddle and shuttle service to launch point. Transportation and livery services are $15. For those bringing their own kayaks, drop off your equipment at the launch point at Eastwood MetroPark as early as 4 p.m. Twin Creek Kayak and Canoe Livery will be there as a security measure to watch over equipment. You are welcome to park near the takeout point and head over to the Tap House for a pre-float pint before boarding the shuttle at 5:30 p.m. to head back up to launch at 6 p.m.

Aug. 14: Very Veggie Feast

Lily’s Bistro, 329 E 5th St., Dayton

This six-course all vegan celebration of Ohio summer produce is a great way to celebrate not only healthy, delicious dining, but Lily’s Bistro’s 5th anniversary. Advance reservations are required. Tickets can be purchased in advance online and at the restaurant with pricing fixed at $49 per person, which includes tax and tip. An optional wine pairing can be added for $15.

Aug. 17: Yellow Cab Food Truck Rally

Yellow Cab Tavern, 700 E. 4th St., Dayton

Dayton’s monthly outdoor food party featuring some of the regions best food trucks, free live music and local craft beers is back for the month of August. Try it out before the summer’s over and these great outdoor parties go on hiatus.

Aug. 18: Bacon Fest

Fraze Pavilion, 695 Lincoln Park Blvd., Kettering

Everything is better with bacon and this event aims to prove it. The event commemorating pork’s best side is back with more food and dishes that will make you want to kick off the front door. Baconlicous delights at last years Bacon Fest included bacon funnel cakes, bacon tacos, candied bacon and bacon wrapped chicken wings. Restaurants confirmed so far include: Amber Rose Restaurant and Catering, Archer’s Tavern, Basil’s On Market, The Dock Food & Spirits, Enon, elé Cake Co., Bistro& Wine Bar, El Meson, Marion’s Piazza, 1776 Grill and Sweet-Umms Chocolatier.

Aug. 25: AleFest Dayton

Dayton Convention Center, 22 E. 5th St., Dayton

With more than 250 craft beers, restaurants selling food and some of the region’s most appreciative beer drinkers, AleFest Dayton is a hot ticket. General admission is $40 in advance and $45 at the door. A limited number of VIP admission tickets will be sold allowing early access to the event. VIPs also receive exclusive access to a number of rare beers and specialty casks. VIP tickets are $60 in advance, $65 at the door.

Aug. 30: The Taste

Fraze Pavilion, 695 Lincoln Park Blvd., Kettering

Presented by the Kettering-Moraine-Oakwood Chamber of Commerce, the 32nd Annual The Taste festival will feature food samples from more than 30 restaurants. Cost is $25 in advance and $30 the day of the event.
