If you purchased a Lenovo laptop in recent years, you may be entitled to some money resulting from the settlement of a class-action lawsuit.
The settlement applies to those who bought a Lenovo laptop in either 2014 or 2015. The settlement amount won’t make you rich, it’ll definitely be worth the time it takes to file a claim.
So how much money are we talking about? According to the terms of the settlement, you could get up to $40 if you are an affected Lenovo laptop owner. That’s the payment you’ll get for “no proof of loss.” If you’re able to provide “proof of loss,” that figure balloons to up to $750.
The deal stems from a lawsuit alleging that Lenovo laptops were sold with a program called Visual Discovery from Starfish, a marketing company. The software, which was shipped on a number of Lenovo’s notebooks, not only slowed computer performance but spied on users and tracked what sites they visited.
To make matters worse, running Visual Discovery ended up decrypting sensitive data on people’s computers. Although Lenovo stopped pre-loading Visual Discovery on its computers at some point, those already with the software had their privacy and security put at significant risk.
In 2015, Starfish agreed to settle adware claims to the tune of $1 million. Three years later, Lenovo agreed to chip in $7.3 million to appease disgruntled plaintiffs. Now that the proposal has been approved, here’s how to file your claim:
