His Democratic opponents, former Ohio Gov. Ted Strickland and Cincinnati City Councilman P.G. Sittenfeld, have yet to release their fundraising totals.
Portman is also trying to counter poor poll results – he’s lagged behind Strickland in the two most recent Quinnipiac polls – by building a strong ground game. His campaign has made more than 100,000 voter contacts through both door-to-door campaigning and phone calls.
In the most recent Quinnipiac Poll, released June 22, Strickland led Portman 46-40 percent. But Portman topped Sittenfeld 49 to 24 percent.
Portman raised $2.75 million during the first quarter of this year. By contrast, Strickland raised about $670,000 and Sittenfeld – who declared in January – raised $750,000 during that period.
