Jessica Wehrman in the Washington Bureau is reporting that Sen. Rob Portman raised more than $2.9 million during the second quarter of 2015, giving him more than $10 million on hand for a Senate bid that’s 16 months away.

His campaign released the figures Monday morning for the period between April 1 and June 30. The reports are due to the Federal Election Commission July 15.

His Democratic opponents, former Ohio Gov. Ted Strickland and Cincinnati City Councilman P.G. Sittenfeld, have yet to release their fundraising totals.

Portman is also trying to counter poor poll results – he’s lagged behind Strickland in the two most recent Quinnipiac polls – by building a strong ground game. His campaign has made more than 100,000 voter contacts through both door-to-door campaigning and phone calls.

In the most recent Quinnipiac Poll, released June 22, Strickland led Portman 46-40 percent. But Portman topped Sittenfeld 49 to 24 percent.

Portman raised $2.75 million during the first quarter of this year. By contrast, Strickland raised about $670,000 and Sittenfeld – who declared in January – raised $750,000 during that period.
