The race for the U.S. Senate seat in Ohio this year was supposed to be one of the most competitive in the nation. It turned out to be a dud.

Polls earlier in the year showed Republican Sen. Rob Portman neck-and-neck with former Gov. Ted Strickland. Portman ended up winning the race 58-37 percent.

"Portman's campaign was so effective that he barely needed to even worry about reelection after Labor Day," Kraushaar wrote.

Portman even did better in the state than Republican Donald Trump did, pulling seven points higher than the president-elect.

Other races that made the National Journal list include Florida Sen. Marco Rubio's re-election campaign and Democrat Maggie Hassan's victory for the Senate seat in New Hampshire.
