Winston has played in 124 games with 119 starts, although none since last year's season finale in Arizona. The president of the NFLPA, Winston will add to the high character quotient in the Bengals locker room while giving the team some added depth at tackle following the season-ending triceps injury to Andre Smith two weeks ago in Houston.
Smith's backup, Marshall Newhouse, struggled Sunday in Tampa Bay and was temporarily benched for two series as the Bengals shuffled left guard Clint Boling to right tackle with Mike Pollak filling Boling's spot.
Newhouse was back at tackle in the second half in Tampa Bay, but he received a minus-1.1 grade from ProFootballFocus, his fourth consecutive negative rating. He also started the Cleveland and New Orleans games while Smith was dealing with an ankle injury.
Meredith was signed last week and was inactive for the game in Tampa Bay.
Schaffer, a Cincinnati native and UC graduated, is a second-year player who suffered a pair of concussions in the preseason and went on IR on Aug. 27.
