Bengals lose Smith for the season

The Bengals placed right tackle Andre Smith on season-ending Injured Reserve today after he suffered a torn left triceps during Sunday's 22-13 victory against Houston.

The team also signed six-year veteran Jamon Meredith, but it is expected that tackle Marshall Newhouse or possibly left guard Clint Boling will replace Smith in the starting lineup.

Newhouse took over for Smith in Sunday's win and helped contain Pro Bowl defensive end J.J. Watt. But Newhouse also struggled while filling in the previous two games when Smith was dealing with an ankle injury.

The Bengals used Boling, a four-year veteran who played tackle and guard in college at Georgia, at right tackle for two snaps Sunday when Newhouse went out after being poked in the eye.

If the team elects to slide Boling to the other side of the line to start at tackle, Mike Pollak would fill Boling's spot at left guard. Pollak, a seventh-year player, appeared in eight games last year with five starts in games 11-15 when Kevin Zeitler was out with a foot injury.

Meredith will be an insurance policy should anything happen to Newhouse or Boling. The 6-foot-5, 312-pounder from the University of South Carolina has 51 games of NFL experience with 24 starts. He was with Indianapolis for the first nine games this year and also has spent time with the  Green Bay Packers, who drafted him in the fifth round in 2009.

The Bengals made one other move Tuesday, terminating linebacker Terrell Manning from the practice squad after he was signed by the New York Giants. The Bengals added Manning to their practice squad last Tuesday.
