Where was this Mohamed Sanu when he was with the Bengals?

With A.J. Green entrenched as one of the NFL’s best at his position and promising newcomers John Ross and Josh Malone on board, the Bengals feel pretty good about themselves at the wide receiver position, but that doesn’t erase the temptation to look at one who got away.

Pro Football Focus pointed out this morning that former Bengal wideout Mohamed Sanu, who went to the Super Bowl last season with the Falcons, has the lowest “drop rate” among wide receivers in the NFL over the past two seasons. He dropped 2.8 percent of his passes over two regular and post seasons, which was better than the Patriots' Danny Amendola (3.7).

Drafted in the third round by Cincinnati in 2012, Sanu was productive as a Bengal yet never really stepped up and into elite territory.

He played in 57 games for the Bengals, pulling in 152 receptions over four seasons for 1,793 yards and 11 touchdowns. His best season -- in terms of raw production -- came in 2014, when he had career highs of 56 receptions, 790 yards, 14.1 yards per catch and five touchdowns.

But Sanu was “targeted” 98 times in ‘14, by far a career high, and his 57.1% reception rate was the lowest of his career by a good margin.

In ‘15, he was targeted just 49 times in 16 games, catching 33 passes (career-best 67.3 percent) for 394 yards (11.9 yards per catch) and no touchdowns.

Sanu missed one game last season with the Falcons, with whom he signed a five-year, $32.5 million contract with $14 million guaranteed, and was quite productive for Atlanta.

He registered a new career high with 59 receptions for 653 yards and four scores and a new career-high reception rate of 72.8 percent.

Should the Bengals have re-signed him last season?
