Ross’ Gentry, wary of peaking, moves on in D-II district wrestling

Ross High School 113-pounder Jake Gentry refuses to think in terms of peaking.

The returning state qualifier entered the Division II district wrestling tournament Friday night at Wilmington with 10 losses and a 2 beside his name after falling in the sectional finals at Batavia last weekend.

Still, Gentry grinded on, moving to Saturday morning’s semis with a 13-2 major decision over Graham 2 sectional champ Austin Murray of Urbana.

“I never want to peak,” Gentry said. “It is always about what can I do better. I feel like I never peak because I always find something I can do better at.”

Gentry outscored his two opponents 30-2.

“I feel pretty good with the way I am wrestling right now,” Gentry said. “When I get that first takedown, I want to just keep going. My engine doesn’t quit.”

Talawanda’s Sean Mondello pulled off a pair of upsets to move into the semis at 152.

Mondello, who finished third at the sectional tournament, knocked off sectional champ Braeden Lehman of Urbana 10-1 and Caleb Linton of Logan Elm 13-4 to earn a semifinal match with Western Brown’s Jake Henderson.

Franklin’s Trent Scott also moved back to the semis after knocking off Batavia sectional champ Noah Pittman, turning the Wyoming wrestler for the fall at the 3:58 mark. Scott will square off with Fenwick returning state qualifier Alex Kowal in the semis at 145.

Dawson will be joined in the semis by teammate Noah Banks at 195.

Lakota West’s Jensen Quinn moved into the semis at 138.
