The NFL fined Cincinnati Bengals linebacker Vontaze Burfict $12,154 for kicking Pittsburgh fullback Roosevelt Nix on the first play of Sunday’s 29-14 loss.
Burfict, who was not penalized on the play, has drawn the ire of Steelers players for years, and it continued Sunday night when running back Le’Veon Bell said in a tweet that the linebacker has “gotta go.”
Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis said Burfict was reacting to a shove from Nix and that outcry “was generally overblown.” But Lewis did say Burfict has to control himself better when instigated.
“You can’t react,” he said. “Everybody on the football team knows you can’t react.”
This is the 10th time Burfict has been either fined or suspended by the league.
