Mason’s Sora picks Indiana State for football

Mason senior Matt Sora made a decision during the recruiting process.

“I was going to commit to where I could see myself wanting to be for the next four years,” Sora said.

The Comets running back ended the recruiting process last week when he committed to accept a full ride to Indiana State University.

“When I visited it just felt like home,” Sora said. “When I walked around campus it felt like I was made to be there and my parents are in love with it too.”

Sora chose Indiana State over Dayton, Butler and Valparaiso.

The Sycamores play in the FCS, formerly Division I-AA, as a part of the Missouri Valley Conference and do provide full scholarships in football.

“The full ride is just a plus,” Sora said. “I loved everything about the school and the coaches and players were so welcoming and on top of it all, I get my school paid for.”

Sora was among Greater Miami Conference leaders in rushing as a junior, gaining 1,262 yards on 221 carries and scoring 13 touchdowns while hauling in 14 passes for 130 yards to start to draw even more college interest.

“It was really stressful,” Sora said of the recruiting process. “I feel a lot better because it is something I don’t have to worry about now.

“I talked to a lot of schools, but Indiana State was constantly in contact with me. That’s another reason why I committed there because they constantly showed they cared.”

Mason is coming off back-to-back Division I playoff appearances and Sora wanted to get recruiting out of the way to focus on a run for a third straight appearance.

“I took it seriously and put a lot of thought into it, but it was something I wanted to get out of the way,” Sora said. “Now, I can focus on my senior season and making my last ride as a Mason Comet something special.”

The Comets fell in Week 11 Sora’s sophomore year before winning their first Division I playoff game last year before losing in the second round.

“This year we want to go further and do better,” Sora said. “We want to play great football every week and take the program even further.”

And Comets coach Brian Castner’s teachings won’t be forgotten by Sora in college.

“Coach always says have the right attitude and effort every time your feet hit the floor,” Sora said. “If you go in thinking you are going to lose, it is not going to be good.

“He has pushed us the last four years and that is something he tells us every day and it is something I am going to take with me the rest of my life.”
