Mason girls tennis will be ‘young’ but hopes to compete for GMC

Mike Reid will have a lot of fresh faces as his Mason girls tennis team looks to defend its Greater Miami Conference title and second place finish in the Ohio Tennis Coaches Association state tournament.

Mason graduated five of its top seven, but does return number one singles player Ananya Aggarwal and third singles Sanjana Reddy. State qualifying doubles team of Nicole Reid and Emma Kruse also return, but a lot of spots are left to be filled.

“We should have a few freshman who will be competing for the open spots as well,” Reid said. “Tryouts will be again be very competitive.”

Reid expects the season to be as competitive as tryouts with Sycamore being the top contender in the GMC and St. Ursula, Ursuline and Turpin providing competition on the regional level.

“We’ll be young, but we’re hoping to compete for the GMC title,” Reid said.

The girls golf team is coming off a second place finish in the GMC and has to replace three of it’s top six.

Coach Chad Layton is looking for a strong experienced squad of six players with varsity experience to go with a plethora of freshmen led by Catherin Zhang.

“My expectations for this season are the same every year we start,” Layton said. “We want to continue to develop and fine tune our game, and gain some experience heading into the tournament.

“I am pleased with our progress so far, but am looking forward to the work that we will have to put in to achieve the goals that we have set for ourselves this season.”

Lebanon: Lebanon boys golf coach Todd Johnson is looking to build on the sixth place finish from the Greater Western Ohio Conference last year.

The Warriors return Christian Bugher, AJ Steketee, Cole Pinkerman and Arthur Sweetman to go with newcomers Bryce Lambert, and freshman Joey Dennis.

The Lebanon girls return all-district placer Maddie Owens to go with Paige Harper and freshman Grace Swartz.

“We expect to compete with each team and show growth individually and as a team.,” coach Pam Russell said. “We hope to work together as one unit.”

Tom Zsembik’s girls tennis team lost two seniors from a 7-12 campaign

Katie Oliver is in her second year playing at first singles.

Mia Kordowski also returns and newcomers Sam Gustin, Lucy Colangelo and Mollie Langdon return with limited varsity experience.

“I know we can improve upon our record of 7-12 and with five girls returning from 2016, we may be overlooked by some teams,” Zsembik said. “I have seen progress from all the girls who participated in open courts all summer.”

Kings: Knights golf coach John Karabinus will have a lot of new players this fall.

Kings graduated six with just senior Jack Scharner returning to the varsity.

Jack Parnell, Matthew Hock and Nick Kohlman look to play key parts to the season with junior Ryan Tekevac adding depth.

“Our guys have been working hard and hope to make noise once again this season,” Karabinus said.

Brian Parkhurst is hoping having experience helps build off a last place finish in the Eastern Cincinnati Conference.

Clemson commit Alex Swayne leads the pack along with Skylar Carr and Kayla Matson. Add in freshmen Leah Swayne and Beka Baumlein and the Knights should move up.

Littme Miami: The Panthers are looking for another strong fall as they try to defend their SWOC All-Sports title.

Mark LaPille’s girls tennis team finished third in the SWOC, but graduated five key players.

Cameryn Anderson was 22-3 last season and returns while Sara Noyes will make the move from doubles to singles. Freshman Jasemine Artikova will add depth for the Panthers.

“The players have been working hard to improve their skills,” LaPille said.

Chris Lynch takes over the helm of the girls golf team and returns Abby Titzer and Madi Cummins to go with newcomers Alex Gomez.

“Our goal is to get better throughout the year,” Anderson said.
