Mason’s girls team sweeps track awards

Winning the Greater Miami Conference track title is nothing new for Mason’s girls team.

The Comets have never left the GMC meet without the team trophy in tow, but last week at Mason High School, they accomplished something else.

Mason swept the meet’s MVP awards for the first time.

Senior Ellie Brush was named runner of the year, thrower Amaya King won her third straight field athlete of the year award and Tony Affatato was named coach of the year.

“It was really pretty exciting,” Affatato said. “It was really fun for us all to be out there together.”

The girls won the team title with 186.5 points, with Brush claiming the 1,600 in 5:02.38 and the 800 in 2:19.14.

King continued her dynasty in the throwing events, winning the discus with a throw of 130 feet, 8 inches and the shot with a toss of 42-6.

“Ellie had an outstanding meet,” Affatato said. “Amaya just keeps breaking her own records and has really been dominating.”

The Mason girls won the 4x200 relay, Maddie Ullron won the 400 in :57.41 and Nicole Bagby defended her title in the pole vault, clearing 12-6.

“I think the girls take great pride in continuing the streak,” Affatato said. “Being able to do that again … we’re really proud in how we competed and to be able to do that.”

The Mason boys hung on to defend their title with 158 points, edging Sycamore by five points.

The Mason boys and girls swept the 4x400 relay while Vince Jackson won the high jump, clearing 6-6, and Cole Marvin won the discus with a toss of 146-9.

“It was very exciting,” Affatato said. “It was a great atmosphere especially with the boys being involved in a close race.”

GWOC: The Lebanon boys and girls both finished eighth overall in the Greater Western Ohio Conference meet.

“I was very proud of the way our guys competed at the GWOC meet,” Lebanon boys coach Jason Simcoe said. “I thought each of the kids represented Lebanon track and field well. Our challenge now is to survive and advance these next few weeks.”

Jordan Campbell was named GWOC West track athlete of the year after winning the 400 (49.74) and the 200 (22.15) in the division. Campbell was also third (11.19) in the 100.

“Jordan is a fierce competitor who relishes the opportunity to put the team on his shoulders,” Simcoe said. “He had his best meet of the year so far at the time the team needed him most. I think he will be very competitive moving through the tournament in whichever events we decide to pursue.”

Kelby Caplinger was second in the 800 in 1:56.55, a mark that puts him in the top 10 times in the state this spring. Jackson Siddall was fourth in the 1,600 (4:27) and 3,200 (9:41).

ECC: Kings finished second in the Eastern Cincinnati Conference meet in both boys and girls.

The Knights got a school and ECC record from the girls 4x800 relay team of Leah Maschino, Karleigh Conner, Jennifer Cooper, and Hannah Rasmussen. The foursome turned in a time of 9:15.30.

Rasmussen also broke the school record in the 1,600, turning in a 4:53.73 in finishing second.

Grant Coleman set an ECC pole vault record with a vault of 14-2 and set a school record in the 110 high hurdles with a 15.16.

SWOC: Little Miami finished third in the boys Southwestern Ohio Conference meet while the girls were fourth.

Dawson Paul won the 1600, breaking a 26-year-old school record. Ryan Honkomp won the 3200 after winning the cross-country title in the fall.

Little Miami scored points in every event in the meet.

The girls also had the best finish since joining the SWOC. Leah Mills was third in the long jump and the 100 and second in the 300 hurdles to pace the Panthers while freshman Lydia Vach won the title in the 800.
