Kings ends successful track season in style

Kings closed out one of the most successful track seasons in program history with a relay team earning All-American honors at the New Balance Nationals.

Kings finished fourth at the Division I regional meet and 15th at the state meet and sent a record number of qualifiers to Greensboro, N.C., for Nationals on June 16-18.

The foursome of Leah Maschino, Karleigh Conner, Jennifer Cooper and Brooke Garter earned All-American honors, finishing sixth in the 4x800 relay in 9:11.59.

“The good thing is, all four girls from the All-American relay were underclassmen who return to the Kings cross-country lineup this fall,” Kings coach Jim Brant said.

Kings might have had another All-American, but Hannah Rasmussen was injured the week of the meet during training.

Rasmussen, who finished second in the 1,600 at the Mid-West Meet of Champions, was scheduled to run the 5,000 at New Balance and entered with the sixth-best qualifying time.

“Hannah went down during practice on the Tuesday before Nationals with a torn tendon in her foot and attended Nationals in a boot and crutches,” Brant said. “Along with running the Kings’ three relays, she was slated to compete in the 5,000.

“Brooke Garter, a freshman, replaced Hannah in the 4x800 team which made the All-American status that much more impressive due to the sub replacing the relay’s fastest leg.”

The foursome also finished 22nd in the 4x1600 relay in 21:51.08.

Maschino, Sarah Bruns and Taylor Brant also competed in the Emerging Elite Division.

Maschino was 28th in the 1,600 in 5:19.03 while Bruns was 32nd in the 100 hurdles (15.20) and 22nd in the 400 hurdles (64.21) while Brant finished 41st in the hammer with a throw of 134 feet, 7 inches.

Bruns, Maschino, Conner and Carolyn Bruns teamed to finish 41st in the 4x400 relay in the Emerging Elite Division in 4:08.00.

Mason’s Maddie Ullom was ninth in the 400 in a time of 57.09 to lead the Comets contingent.

Amaya King was 14th in the shot put with a throw of 45-7.25 and 26th in the discus with a throw of 127-8 while Nicole Bagby finished 25th in the pole vault after clearing 11-10.

“All three girls that competed had a great experience and it was a wonderful opportunity for them to compete against other kids throughout the nation on such a great stage,” Mason girls coach Tony Affatato said. “They all had a great time and enjoyed the experience.”

The Mason boys sprint medley relay team finished ninth in 1:32. The relay consisted of legs of 100, 100, 200 and 400 for the anchor.

Jaymon Penn, Andrew Kemme, Bryan Hudnell and Hayden Cobb turned in a 1:32 in finishing ninth and just missing the school record.

Andrew Kemme, Akintunde Nelson, Nicholas French and Carter Witmer-Gautsch also just missed the school record in the shuttle hurdle relay, finishing 17th in 1:01.98.

“I was pleased with that,” Mason boys track coach Chip Dobson said. “It was a good day. It was a great group of guys who made the time standard and wanted to go and they ran well.”
