HS Highlights for Oct. 22: Ponitz FB reaches milestone

Ponitz ran over Gamble Montessori and into the record books with a 43-12 win in football on Saturday at Welcome Stadium.

It marked the sixth win for the Golden Panthers, a school record. Jamil Freeman surpassed the 1,000 rushing yard mark for the second straight season, scoring two touchdowns along the way. Xavier Henry finished 8-of-15 for 122 yards and a touchdown to go with 7 carries for 50 yards and two scores.

Deedgar Cooks and Marquis Henry also had a touchdown apiece.

Ponitz (6-3) will close its season out at Cin. College Prep on Friday night.

Alter 35, McNicholas 3: Alter pounded McNicholas, outpacing the Rockets offensively by 415 yards to 114. 398 of those yards came on the ground where the Knights (9-0) churned out over eight yards per rush.

Chaminade Julienne 42, Badin 10: Ryan Peltier threw three touchdown passes and CJ benefitted from three special teams scores in the win. Jac'Quel Freeman scored on a 92-yard kickoff return, Noah Walusis returned a blocked punt 20 yards for a score and Darian Jones had a 64-yard punt return that wrapped up the scoring for the Eagles (6-3). Lavassa Martin scored on a one-yard TD run and Matthew Schweinefuss hit a 40-yard field goal for Badin (2-7).

Beavercreek 9, West Carrollton 0: Beavercreek improved to 13-2-3 with the win.

Lebanon 5, Hamilton 0: Emi Carlo and Maeve Maloney each had a goal and an assist to lead Lebanon (11-5-1). Keeper Ashley West recorded 8 saves in the shutout.

Division II

Bellbrook 5, Tippecanoe 3: Cassidy Hofacker scored twice and Lauren Chew had a goal and an assist to lead Bellbrook.

Carroll 3, Eaton 0: Jillian Roberts knocked in two goals and Jess Roberts added a goal and an assist for Carroll.

Division III

Milton-Union 2, Bethel 1, OT: Kristen Dickison put in the game-winner off of a Danielle McFarland assist. McFarland put Milton-Union (13-3-2) on the board in regulation and Erica Turner had the equalizer for Bethel.

West Liberty-Salem 2, Newton 0: Taylor Lauck and Kennedie Cox netted a goal apiece and keeper Paige Shafer notched a pair of saves in the shutout for WLS (14-2).

Sectional Finals

Division I

Centerville 3, Northmont 0: Centerville knocked off Northmont with scores of 25-16, 25-5 and 25-9 to take home a sectional title.

Lakota East 3, Turpin 2: Lakota East held off a Turpin rally, taking the last set 15-13 for a sectional title.

Miamisburg 3, Beavercreek 2: Miamisburg took the last two sets 25-22 and 15-12 for the rally win in this sectional final.

Springboro 3, Troy 1: Springboro edged Troy in close sets to win a sectional title.

Division II

Alter 3, Bellbrook 2: Alter took the final set 15-8 in a back-and-forth contest for the sectional title.

Fenwick 3, Valley View 0: Fenwick swept Valley View with scores of 25-11, 25-12 and 25-18 for a sectional title.

District Tournament

At West Chester

Division I-A: Garrett Shelby, Alex Kelker and Noah Mang of Lakota West and Zach Birdsall of Fairfield qualified individually for the Regional Tournament. On the girls side Hannah Riesenberg finished 12th and Emma Cunningham 16th to help the Firebirds advance.

Division I-B: Dustin Horter of Lakota East won the boys race with a 15:02.09 finish and Ali Neumeier finished third in the girls race. The Thunderhawks boys and girls teams both finished second overall to qualify for regionals.

Division II-A: Josh Wolpert placed second, Sam Krabacher was third and Kyle Manuel finished fourth to lead the Badin boys to a win. Steven Knebel finished sixth to help the Ross boys advance. Nathan Thobe of Madison qualified individually. On the girls side Ross placed third to advance and Paige Parrish of Badin and Hannah Tebbe of Fenwick qualified individually.

Division II-B: Rachel Ploeger won and Alayna Garver finished second to help Monroe finish second and advance. Abby Hudek of Madison qualified individually. Finn Connors of Fenwick and Colin Cooper of Monroe qualified individually for the boys.

Division III: For the boys Chandler Long of Middletown Christian and Matthew Floyd and David Higgins of Cin. Christian advanced individually. Anna Holder and Hannah Ferguson of Cin. Christian and Brooke Tesmer of Dayton Christian qualified individually for the girls.
