The task for the Badin girls basketball team was daunting.
Anna, the defending Division III runner-up, made sure the task was also impossible.
For the second consecutive season, Anna eliminated the Rams from postseason play with a 64-35 triumph in the Division III district finals at Springfield High School.
“(Anna) was the aggressor and we played tentative at times,” Badin coach Tom Sunderman said. “The thing about Anna is they pressure and they come at you for 32 minutes. We can’t mimic (in practice) what they do.”
Kalli Riggins scored eight points and snared eight rebounds for the Rams, who finished the season 12-13. Casie Brandenburg added seven points and Torey Stang chipped in six for Badin, which was making its fourth straight trip to the district finals.
Natalie Billing led all scorers with 25 points for Anna while Erica Huber added 12.
The Rockets, who won the Division III state title in 2011 and finished second in 2012, improved to 22-4.
Anna will play Miami East in the regional semifinals Wednesday at 8 p.m. at Springfield.
Badin led early, 4-2, but the Rockets ran off 23 of the next 25 points, leading 19-6 after the first quarter and 35-17 at half.
Poor shooting and sloppy ball-handling hurt the Rams in the first half. Badin went 7-of-22 from the field, 3-of-9 from the free-throw line and turned the ball over 18 times in the first half,
“We showed signs of being a young team,” Sunderman said. “We weren’t being the aggressor. We were hoping our shots would go in but I am proud of my team. They really fought through most of it.”
Anna shot 13-of-26 from the floor in the first half and committed committed six turnovers against the Rams’ full-court press.
Badin committed 10 more turnovers in the third quarter and Billling tallied eight points as Anna extended the lead to 52-26 entering the fourth quarter.
Badin, which graduates one starter, finished with 35 turnovers.
