Defensive end Johnson to return to Bengals practice today

Cincinnati Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis said defensive end Michael Johnson will practice today for the first time since suffering an undisclosed injury on the first day of training camp.

Johnson has started 31 of a possible 32 games for the Bengals since playing for Tampa Bay in 2014.

The team also should see Derron Smith back on the field soon, although the safety said it probably won’t be today. Smith left practice early Sunday after a teammate fell on his ankle and rolled it. Starting safety George Iloka also left practice early Sunday with a sprained knee and is expected to miss 3-4 weeks.

Other players still mending are wide receivers Jake Kumerow and Chris Brown, cornerback Tony McRae, defensive lineman David Dean and offensive lineman T.J. Johnson.

Running back Cedric Peerman (Non-Football Injury list) and rookie sixth-round safety Brandon Wilson (Physically Unable to Perform list) have yet to be medically cleared to practice since camp began.
