College Insider: Middletown’s Edwards playing key role for Purdue

Vincent Edwards continues to be a standout player with the Purdue University men’s basketball team.

The 6-foot-8 junior forward and Middletown High School graduate is averaging 11.3 points, 5 rebounds and 3.4 assists per game for the Boilermakers, who are 19-5 overall and 8-3 in the Big Ten Conference.

Edwards, who has started 16 games, is shooting 45.7 percent from the field, 44.7 percent from 3-point range and 83 percent from the charity stripe.

Purdue visits Indiana on Thursday at 7 p.m.

• Freshman forward Ryan Middendorf (Lakota East) has made four starts for Lake Erie and is averaging 5.8 points and 2 rebounds per game.

He’s shooting 42.3 percent from the floor, 37.6 percent from beyond the arc and 68.8 percent from the line.

The Storm, 4-20 overall and 3-13 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference South Division, will be on the road Thursday to face Ashland at 7:30 p.m.

• Freshman guard William Greene (Roger Bacon) of Fairfield is playing 14 minutes per game off the bench for Wilmington, which is 8-13 overall and 3-11 in the Ohio Athletic Conference.

Greene is averaging 2.8 points, 1.6 assists and 1.3 rebounds per game. He’s shooting 40.8 percent from the floor and 73.7 percent from the foul line.

The Quakers will travel to Otterbein on Wednesday at 7 p.m.

Women's basketball: Sophomore guard/forward Hayley Hudson (Ross) is averaging 2.3 points, 2.7 rebounds and 1.7 assists per game for Mount St. Joseph. She's made one start.

The Lions are 2-19 overall and 1-13 in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference. They’ll host Transylvania on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.

Women's swimming: Senior Savannah Rice (Lakota West) had three top-five finishes for Rose-Hulman in a Jan. 27 dual meet at Franklin (Ind.).

Rice was second in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:14.57), second in the 200 medley relay (1:58.02) and fifth in the 50 freestyle (27.53).

The Engineers lost the dual 130-80. They will travel to Pleasant Prairie, Wis., for the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin Championships, which run from Thursday through Saturday.
