College Insider: Lakota West’s Brown with strong year at Shawnee

Shawnee State University sophomore Marisa Brown shared the Mid-South Conference softball lead in RBIs this spring.

The Lakota West High School graduate is a catcher and took first-team MSC honors in the designated player position.

Brown hit .365 with 11 doubles, a triple, four home runs, 51 RBIs, 19 runs and three stolen bases as the Bears went 24-24 overall and 12-12 in the conference.

Freshman infielder Katie Wolsefer (Franklin) made 46 starts for Shawnee and had a .223 batting average with seven doubles, a homer, 13 RBIs, 12 runs and three steals.

• Catcher/infielder Kirsten Reed (Lebanon) had a solid freshman season for Walsh, hitting .293 with six doubles, three triples, one home run, 12 RBIs, 10 runs and two stolen bases.

The Cavaliers were 14-33 overall and 4-18 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.

Baseball: Senior catcher Ryan Ostendorf (Lakota West) helped Wooster win the North Coast Athletic Conference tournament championship and advance to the NCAA Division III Mideast Regional in Washington, Pa., where the Fighting Scots went 1-2.

Ostendorf started 44 games and hit .283 with seven doubles, two triples, two homers, 20 RBIs, 37 runs and nine steals.

Wooster, 36-10 overall and 13-5 in the conference, was the NCAC East Division champion.

• Sophomore infielder Brad Malott (Madison) started 34 games for Wittenberg, hitting .315 with two doubles, a triple, 17 RBIs, 20 runs and five stolen bases.

Also for the Tigers, junior pitcher Andrew Goodpaster (Carlisle) was 2-2 with a save and a 4.15 earned run average in 10 mound appearances, while freshman outfielder Shane Harris (Lakota West) played in 11 games and had a home run and four RBIs.

Wittenberg finished 13-23 overall and 5-11 in the North Coast Athletic Conference.

• Sophomore pitcher Brandon Sandlin (Franklin) made six appearances this year for Union (Ky.), going 0-1 with a 6.00 earned run average. He struck out three and issued no walks.

The Bulldogs went 29-24 overall and 14-13 in the Appalachian Athletic Conference.

Women's tennis: Otterbein senior Rylie Markle (Madison) was a first-team selection this spring in the Ohio Athletic Conference.

Markle competed at the No. 1 spot in singles and doubles for the Cardinals. She was 11-13 in singles play this year and 13-10 in doubles, combining with freshman Makayla Sutter for an 11-6 mark in doubles.

Otterbein finished 13-6, marking its 11th straight season with double-digit wins.
