College Insider: Lakota East grads excelling for Christian Brothers

Two Lakota East High School products are among the top players in the Christian Brothers University men’s basketball program in Memphis, Tenn.

Sophomore forward Adam Dieball is tied for the team lead in scoring (15.6) and also tops the Buccaneers in blocks (1.8). He is averaging 5.0 rebounds and 4.1 assists per game while shooting 52.5 percent from the field, 48.6 percent from 3-point range and 62.1 percent from the line.

Redshirt freshman guard/forward Mitch Mays is collecting 8.9 points, 2.3 boards and 1.6 assists per contest. He’s shooting 52.3 percent from the floor, 40 percent from beyond the arc and 77.8 percent from the charity stripe.

Dieball and Mays have both started nine games for CBU, which is 7-3 overall and 4-0 in the Gulf South Conference.

The Buccaneers will travel to Mississippi College on Dec. 31 at 4 p.m.

Women's basketball: Senior guard Meghan Miller (Madison) has made six starts for Asbury (Ky.) and is averaging 6.0 points, 2.1 rebounds, 1.3 assists and 0.9 steals per game.

Miller is also shooting 48.7 percent from the floor and 40.7 percent from 3-point range for the Eagles, who are 7-8 overall and 2-2 in the River States Conference.

Asbury travels to Kentucky Wesleyan on Dec. 31 at 2 p.m.

Football: West Virginia's Adam Pankey (Hamilton), a redshirt senior offensive tackle, was an honorable-mention selection in the Big 12 Conference.

The Mountaineers (10-2) will face Miami (Fla.) in the Russell Athletic Bowl at 5:30 p.m. on Dec. 28 in Orlando, Fla.

• Two local players have been honored by the Pioneer Football League.

Morehead State’s Liam Maloney (Lakota West), a redshirt junior offensive tackle, was named to the second team. The Eagles finished 4-7.

Valparaiso’s Frank Catrine (Fenwick), a junior wide receiver, was an honorable-mention pick.

Catrine was the leading receiver for the Crusaders (4-7), totaling 42 receptions for 496 yards and three touchdowns. He also carried the ball seven times for 126 yards and a score.
