College Insider: Hamilton’s Oliver, Riggins key figures for IU football

Hamilton High School products Marcus Oliver and A’Shon Riggins are starters for the Indiana University football team, which finished the regular season with a 6-6 record.

Oliver, a redshirt junior linebacker, ranks second on the squad with 96 total tackles (65 solos, 31 assists). The Big Ten Conference honorable-mention selection has 15.5 tackles for loss, five forced fumbles, four sacks and one fumble recovery.

Riggins, a freshman cornerback, has started the last eight games. He has 37 total tackles (35 solos, two assists), two tackles for loss, one interception, one sack and one forced fumble.

Redshirt senior Dawson Fletcher (Lakota West) is a backup linebacker with 18 total tackles (15 solos, three assists), 1.5 tackles for loss and one sack.

Redshirt freshman Simon Stepaniak (Ross) made his first career start at right offensive guard in the regular-season finale against Purdue.

The Hoosiers will face Utah in the Foster Farms Bowl on Dec. 28 in Santa Clara, Calif. Kickoff is slated for 8:30 p.m.

• Michigan sophomore offensive tackle Nolan Ulizio (Lakota West) has garnered a spot on the Big Ten Conference All-Academic team.

Ulizio has played in three games this season for the Wolverines (10-2), who will meet Florida State in the Capital One Orange Bowl at 8 p.m. on Dec. 30 in Miami Gardens, Fla.

Volleyball: Purdue redshirt junior setter Ashley Evans (Lakota East) has been named an Academic All-American for the second straight year by the College Sports Information Directors of America.

Evans, a mechanical engineering major, was a second-team selection after earning a spot on the third team last year.

She led the Boilermakers with 1,403 assists and tied for the team lead in services aces with 29, adding 267 digs, 107 kills and 58 total blocks.

Purdue (19-14) advanced to the NCAA tournament, defeating Iowa State 3-0 and losing to Missouri 3-1.

Women's tennis: Freshman Hannah Broermann (Badin) was Mount St. Joseph's representative on the All-Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference sportsmanship team this fall.

Broermann led the Lions in singles wins with 10. She was 2-0 in the No. 3 slot, 1-0 at No. 4, 3-1 at No. 5 and 4-5 at No. 6.
