College Insider: Fairfield’s Turner named Academic All-American

University of Akron redshirt senior James Turner has completed his collegiate football career as an Academic All-American.

The 5-foot-11, 209-pound safety and Fairfield High School graduate was voted onto the 2016 Academic All-America Division I second team by the College Sports Information Directors of America.

The team captain played in 10 games and made two starts for the Zips (5-7). He finished with 21 total tackles (14 solos, seven assists).

Turner competed as a graduate student this fall. He earned his bachelor’s degree in business and has a 4.00 grade point average in the sport science master’s program.

Also for Akron, sophomore Nick Gasser (Lakota East) punted 59 times for a 37.7-yard average and dropped 22 kicks inside the 20-yard line, while junior wide receiver Austin Wolf (Lebanon) caught 36 passes for 550 yards and five touchdowns.

• Thomas More went 9-2 and lost to Wittenberg 33-30 in a four-overtime thriller in the first round of the NCAA Division III tournament.

Two Saints were named to the Presidents’ Athletic Conference first team, senior running back C.T. Tarrant (Hamilton) and senior cornerback Brandon Neal (Lakota West).

Tarrant led Thomas More in rushing with 1,202 yards and 18 touchdowns on 210 carries. Neal collected 36 solo tackles, seven assists, three interceptions and two tackles for loss while returning eight kickoffs for a 24.4-yard average.

Among the additional contributors for the Saints were senior defensive tackle Houston Krause (Badin), who had 15 solos, 17 assists and five tackles for loss; senior long snapper Blake Gebhardt (Franklin), who notched two solos, one assist and one fumble recovery; and freshman defensive lineman Noah Sayre (Lebanon), who had one assist.

Men's soccer: Malone defender Jonathan Dendinger (Lebanon) has been named to the Great Midwest Athletic Conference All-Freshman Team.

Dendinger started every game for the Pioneers (2-12-2). Junior midfielder Cole Hoop (Cincinnati Christian) made 15 starts, and sophomore defender Christian Kallenberger (Cincinnati Christian) started eight games and marked an assist.
