College Insider: East’s Jessee swims his way to All-America status

Keith Jessee earned All-America men’s swimming honors in two events at the NAIA National Championships on March 1-4 in Columbus, Ga.

The Asbury University sophomore and Lakota East High School graduate was third in the 200-yard individual medley (1:51.06) and 400 IM (4:02.52) to achieve All-America status.

Jessee set a school record with his sixth-place finish in the 200 breaststroke (2:03.88) and also set a new school standard with a 10th-place time of 1:34.82 in the 200 medley relay.

He was eighth in the 800 freestyle relay (6:56.97), ninth in the 200 free relay (1:26.36), 11th in the 400 medley relay (3:30.48) and 12th in the 400 free relay (3:09.23).

The Eagles placed 11th in the team standings.

• Ohio Northern senior John Raker (Lakota West) turned in a strong showing at the Ohio Athletic Conference Championships on Feb. 16-18 at Akron’s Ocasek Natatorium.

Raker took first place in the 200-yard butterfly (1:54.26) and was third in the 400 individual medley (4:12.28) and fifth in the 200 IM (1:56.08).

Also for ONU, junior Michael Drake (Fairfield) finished seventh in the 400 IM (4:29.83), 12th in the 200 fly (2:04.08) and 16th in the 200 IM (2:07.42).

As a team, the Polar Bears placed second behind John Carroll.

Men's basketball: Purdue junior forward Vincent Edwards (Middletown) was a third-team selection by the media and an honorable-mention choice by the coaches in the Big Ten Conference.

Edwards is averaging 12.2 points, 4.8 rebounds and 3.2 assists per game while shooting 47.4 percent from the field, 43 percent from the 3-point range and 84.5 percent from the foul line.

He has 1,077 career points and ranks 41st on the Boilermakers’ all-time scoring list.

Purdue (25-7) is seeded fourth in the NCAA Tournament’s Midwest Regional and will meet No. 13 Vermont (29-5) on Thursday in Milwaukee, Wis.

• Hillsdale (Mich.) junior guard Stedman Lowry (Lakota East) was voted onto the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference second team.

Lowry led the Chargers (15-12) in scoring with a 14.8 average, also getting 3.7 boards and 1.3 assists per game. He shot 45.5 percent from the floor, 41.3 percent from beyond the arc and 80 percent from the charity stripe.

Women's basketball: Xavier redshirt senior guard Raeshaun Gaffney (Fairfield) was an honorable-mention selection in the Big East Conference.

Gaffney paced the Musketeers (12-18) in scoring with a 14.3 average, also collecting 4.5 rebounds and 1.8 assists per contest. She shot 38.7 percent from 3-point range and 76.1 percent from the line.
