College Insider: East’s Emrick playing role for unbeaten FSU

Freshman forward Andrew Emrick is contributing for the second-ranked team in NCAA Division II men’s basketball.

The Lakota East High School graduate is averaging 12.9 minutes per game for Fairmont State University and is shooting 53.3 percent from the floor.

Emrick, who has made one start this year, is averaging 5.6 points, 2.5 rebounds, 1.1 assists and 0.4 steals per game for the Falcons, who are 20-0 overall and 14-0 in the Mountain East Conference.

He scored a career-high 19 points in Saturday’s 116-77 victory over visiting Virginia-Wise, sinking 9 of 10 field goals while collecting six rebounds, two assists and a steal.

FSU, which is scoring 99.8 points per contest, hosts Wheeling Jesuit on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.

Women's basketball: Senior forward Kirsten Paul (Cincinnati Christian) has started every game for unbeaten Thomas More, which was ranked fourth in NCAA Division III last week by D3hoops.com.

Paul is averaging 7.4 points, 5.0 rebounds, 1.3 steals and 0.8 assists per game while shooting 69.2 percent from the field.

The Saints are 19-0 overall and 12-0 in the Presidents’ Athletic Conference. They will travel to Bethany (W.Va.) on Wednesday at 6 p.m.

Women's swimming: Sophomore Tiffany Howard (Lakota West) placed in three events for Urbana during a Jan. 21 dual meet against visiting Wheeling Jesuit.

Howard was first in the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:45.92), third in the 100 backstroke (1:10.56) and fourth in the 50 free (27.74).

The Blue Knights lost the dual 120-73. They will travel to Christiansburg, Va., for the Appalachian Swimming Conference Championships on Feb. 9-11.

Men's indoor track & field: Junior Benjamin Call (Lakota East) ran for Cumberlands last weekend at the Findlay Classic.

Call placed seventh in the 5,000 meters (16:14.65) and 13th in the mile (4:41.99).

The Patriots will participate in the Camel City Invitational in Winston-Salem, N.C., on Friday and Saturday.
