Cincinnati Reds sign three; two others still awaiting deals

The Cincinnati Reds announced Friday they have avoided arbitration with three of their five eligible players.

Billy Hamilton, Anthony DeSclafani and Michael Lorenzen all agreed to one-year deals.

Hamilton is a speedy centerfielder who has been the subject of some trade rumors while DeSclafani is a starting pitcher who missed all of last season with arm problems.

Lorenzen has been one of the team’s top relievers the past two seasons and is expected to contend for a spot in the rotation this spring.

Scooter Gennett and Eugenio Suarez remain unsigned.

Both of them are coming off career years.

Gennett slugged 27 homers and drove in 97 runs while batting .295 in his first season with his hometown team.

Suarez hit .267 with 26 homers and 82 RBIs and showed improvement defensively at third base.

If they can’t come to terms on a deal, an abritrator will determine their salaries for the coming season based on figures submitted by the player and the team.

Each could also sign a long-term contract instead.
