Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Tyler Boyd said he was surprised to find out why he wasn’t active for Thursday’s game against Houston, and added that he still hasn’t been told why.

“I guess they needed more roles on special teams or whatever they need, but I haven’t gotten a specific answer,” Boyd said Monday afternoon. “Every day I go out there to prove myself, just go out there and compete. That’s the type of guy I am. I don’t feel like what I was doing on offense was bad, because they haven’t really came and said anything negative about my performance or play.”

The team’s second-round pick in 2016, Boyd was active for all 16 games as a rookie with two starts, catching 54 passes for 603 yards and a touchdown. He played 69 percent of the snaps in the season-opening loss against Baltimore before being one of the seven inactives for the game against the Texans.

Boyd said seeing the team struggle and not score a touchdown in its first two games makes it even harder to deal with not being active Thursday.

“Everybody wants to help the team win in any way,” he said. “My part that day was just to cheer guys on and try to keep guys’ heads up. It was hurtful for me to just watch it, and I can’t do nothing about it.”
