Barrett breaks record as Buckeyes win big

  • Story Highlights
  • Army shutout in second half by Ohio State..

J.T. Barrett quieted the critics — for one week at least — and passed a Big Ten legend in the record books as the No. 8 Ohio State Buckeyes bounced back from their first loss with a 38-7 rout of Army on Saturday at Ohio State.

Barrett threw two touchdown passes and ran for another. He has been responsible for 107 touchdowns (rushing and passing in his career. He broke the record of 106 held by Purdue's Drew Brees since his college career ended in 2000.

One week after Ohio State lost 31-16 to Oklahoma, Barrett completed 25 of 33 passes for 270 yards. He rushed seven times for 32 yards.

J.K. Dobbins carried the running game with 13 carries for 172 yards and two touchdowns. K.J. Hill led the receivers with eight catches for 74 yards.

Terry McLaurin and Austin Mack caught touchdown passes in the second half.

Ohio State's defense blanked Army in the second half and forced one turnover. Kendall Sheffield recovered a fumble by quarterback Ahmad Bradshaw.

The Buckeyes led 17-7 at halftime. Barrett and Dobbins capped off Ohio State’s first two drives with touchdown runs.

Ohio State went 75 yards in eight plays and then 94 yards in 13 plays. The offense ran so smoothly, the Buckeyes didn’t need to convert a third or fourth down on either drive.

Ohio State didn’t look as sharp on its third drive and chose to punt from the Army 34-yard line. Army took over at the 1-yard line and then ran 18 plays, taking 9 minutes, 37 seconds off the clock, before Darnell Woolfolk scored on a 3-yard run to cut Ohio State’s lead to 14-7.

Sean Nuernberger kicked a 33-yard field goal to give Ohio State a 17-7 lead late in the second quarter. A touchdown catch by Parris Campbell came off the board on that drive because of a holding call.

Ohio State (2-1) stays at home next Saturday for a noon game against UNLV (1-1), which did not play this week.
