Dayton Flyers: Antetokounmpo’s status still unknown

Dayton redshirt freshman suffered injury on July 10 in Greece

The University of Dayton will wait until redshirt freshman forward Kostas Antetokounmpo returns to campus in August and gets examined before providing an update on the injury he suffered in Greece on July 10, a spokesman said Wednesday.

On Wednesday, Dayton senior guard Darrell Davis, in a wide-ranging interview with the Dayton Daily News about the upcoming season, said he had been in communication with Antetokounmpo.

“I heard he fractured something,” Davis said, “but when I asked him if everything was going to be OK, he said he’s not hurt too bad. I just saw him on Instagram today that he was working out, so I think everything is fine with Kostas. He’s coming back Aug. 20.”

Dayton coach Anthony Grant and trainer Mike Mulcahey talked to Antetokounmpo after the injury. UD reported Antetokounmpo told them he had been diagnosed with a non-displaced tibia (lower leg bone) fracture after the game in the Crete. UD said Antetokounmo would get a second opinion in Athens, Greece, but that it wouldn't have further comment on the injury until he was examined in the United States.

The injury prevented Antetokounmpo from playing with Greece's national team in the FIBA U-20 championships. Greece beat Israel on Sunday to claim the championship.

A day after the initial reports of the injury, Jonathan Givony, of Draft Express, reported Antetokounmpo had suffered a hyper-extended knee, not a fracture, and would miss three to four weeks.
