HAMILTON — The Badin High School girls basketball team taught Edgewood a hard lesson: You can't win if you can't score, and you can't score if you don't have the ball.

Using a deep bench, a balanced attack and a pesky full-court defense that rang up 18 steals and held the Cougars to 10-of-40 shooting from the field, the host Rams notched a 47-25 victory Wednesday night, Jan. 21, at Mulcahey Gym.

"Their pressure and our inability to handle it was the difference," Edgewood coach Greg Brown said. "That, and we couldn't make shots."

Both teams started tentatively. Over 2½ minutes went by before senior Sarah Schueller hit a layup to give the visitors a 2-0 lead. That edge would be their last.

The Rams scored the next eight points and held a 10-6 advantage after the first period. Badin's Courtney Hubbard had as many points as the Cougars after the first frame.

"They came out more physical, but I'm proud of our girls because we responded," Rams coach Tom Sunderman said.

Badin's full-court defense started to take a toll on Edgewood (4-9). Consecutive Cougar possessions resulted in Badin's Morgan Retherford stealing the inbounds pass and scoring. By intermission, Badin had parlayed 13 steals into a 25-14 lead.

"We knew we couldn't let Edgewood get into a half-court game," Sunderman said. "We wanted to get pressure in the backcourt and play physical without using our hands."

Edgewood's chances for a comeback took a blow less than a minute into the third quarter. After a collision at midcourt, Schueller — who averages over nine points a game — went down in obvious pain.

"It was knee-to-knee, and hopefully it's just a bruise," Brown said.

Senior Leanne Williams tried to carry the Cougars and finished with a game-high 13 points, but Badin (7-7) just had too much.

Hubbard led the Rams with 12 points, while freshman Kara Gerbus had 10 and Retherford added eight.

Edgewood returns to Fort Ancient Valley Conference action Saturday, hosting Ross.

Badin is idle until traveling to Little Miami on Wednesday, Jan. 28.
